"How to Make a Patterned Tile"
A Tutorial by Celia Martin
Martin's Eclectic Adventures

You can make unique patterned tiles from just about any image using the Pizza Slice Mirror and Diamonds filters available free from Sandy Blair's Simple Filters page.  After you've downloaded and installed the filters into your Plugins folder (you'll find instructions on the site), you're ready to go!

These instructions are for Paint Shop Pro 7, but should work for most comparable programs.

Open a new image with a transparent background. You may use whatever size you wish, although it must be square.  For this tutorial, use a 100x100 pixel image.
Image2
Click on the Tube tool Tube Tool and select a tube.  I used my PearlsCM tube, which you can download here.  Click some images into the canvas, concentrating on the lower left corner as shown here. Compare the image on the left to the next one and you'll be able to see where the filter will take the sample for the effect.

Go to Effects>Plug-In Filters>Simple Filters>Pizza Slice Mirror.  Cool, yes?  If you like what you see, you're done.  Save it as a .jpg file.

If you want to experiment further, go to Effects>Plug-In Filters>Simple Filters>Diamonds, and you'll get this.

I ended up with this tile after applying the Diamonds filter two more times.  You can then experiment with other effects (such as Gaussian Blur to soften) to further change the image.

Leave your pattern tile open for the next steps.

This handsome fellow is Vlad, who has
agreed to be my model for this project.

Open the image containing your subject, Shift+D to duplicate (always work from a copy!) and promote it to a layer Layers>Promote to Layer

I used the Eraser Tool Eraser Tool to remove the area around Vlad so he is against a transparent background (left-click erases, right-click puts it back if you goof).  You could also use the Lasso Tool Lasso Tool set on Point to Point.

Add a new layer, then move under the first one Layers>Arrange>Move Down.

Click on the Flood Fill Tool Fill Tool, then click on the little triangle on the Styles panel, then choose Pattern (Fig. 1).  Then click on the Foreground box (Fig. 2).
Pattern Style 3
Click on the dropdown list, find your pattern tile and click on it, then click on OK.

Left click with the Flood Fill Tool on the bottom layer and it will fill the layer with your tile.  Not bad, eh?  Matches Vlad's eyes :).

Then File>Save Copy As and save as a .jpg file.  I keep the original saved in layers as a .psp file in case I want to make changes later.
